Solar Powered Water Pumping

We Can Help with Remote Pumping
Hotwire has the technical background to recommend and install water pumping too! Solar powered water pumping makes a lot of sense if you have a situation where the power lines are a long ways away.

Solar can be used for wells down to 400 feet, surface pumping, pressure water system, or water aeration. The USDA has offered incentives available for some applications. Call us for a quote.

Solar can provide pumping for livestock. In the summer when there is little wind and more demand, the solar system provides more water. Shown above is a system that provides 1200 gallons per day using two Kaneka 60 watt solar modules with a Grundfos SQ well pump.

Solar Modules

Photovoltaics give you a silent, reliable, maintenance-free source of electricity to charge your batteries. You can start with a small system and easily add more modules as your needs grow.

Hotwire Enterprises offers solar products from Aurinco, Solar World, Kyocera, SolarTech, and Battery Solutions Plus. Evergreen, BP, Yingli, GE, Power Up, Iowa Thin Film, Sopray, Uni-Solar, Kaneka, Mitsubishi, Sanyo, SunWize, Sharp and other brands also are available. The solar modules most popular and useful to boaters are listed below.

The photovoltaic market is changing. We are following developments closely and will update this page as we learn about additional options opening up.

How to Select Solar Modules

How do you know which one(s) to get? The first question you should ask yourself is “Where will I mount it on my boat?” Refer to the Solar FAQ page and read #3. Look at your chosen site. How often does that area get shadowed? Choose high output technology for sites that get a lot of full sun; choose shade tolerant technology for sites that are often or always shadowed. Go back to the Solar FAQ page and read #8. Then measure the dimensions of your chosen location, and find a module that will fit within that area.

Please contact us if you need details on solar modules not shown here or need help on deciding what’s right for you.

Note; as of spring 2012 the supply and pricing is changing rapidly.  Please call for the latest information.

We have access to many other solar modules. Please call for pricing on Mitsubishi, BP, Sharp,  and others.

Choosing a Solar Module

Which module you choose will depend partly on your available space and its size and partly on how much and how often that space is shadowed. If you plan to put a module across your dodger where it will be shadowed by the boom, then choose one of the shade-tolerant modules. You’ll get more power from it in the long run. If you can put one (or more) above your davits (or on your arch) where it isn’t likely to be shadowed, then go with a high output technology. And we’re available to assist you with your choice.

An Embarrassment of Mangoes

An Embarrassment of Mangos
By Ann Vanderhoof
A great read!! Ann is a writer by profession (former editor of Cottage Life magazine and contributor to Port Guides) and put together a great story! We actually met these fun folks in Grenada back in 1996 when we were all exploring the island for the first time! We shared an anchorage with them and rode around together in Cat-Eye’s “maxi-taxi” for an overview of the island. A more positive-thinking couple would be hard to find, and the uplifting attitudes come through in her book. It’s a story of their journey from Toronto through the Caribbean, learning about their boat, meeting people and making friends. It’s a comedy. It’s a tale of island history. It’s a collection of island recipes she learned along the way. It’s also her personal discovery that boundaries and limits are set within our own minds and that we can pick them up and move them around any time we choose. The book defies categorizing and is even enjoyed by the guys!  John says, “If you have a special lady friend, and want her to go cruising with you, this is the book you should buy for her to read.”

KISS Slip Ring

For most installations, I don’t recommend that you add the slip rings, because you won’t need them and because of the extra cost.  The slip rings allow the wind generator to rotate on the pole indefinitely.  The way the KISS comes, there is a tether that allows the wind generator to rotate about 3 turns in either direction from straight ahead.  If you are in an anchorage, the boat will be pointing more or less into the wind most of the time.  It’s only when you are on the banks, a river or in a marina that the boat will be doing 360s.  However, if the wind generator is mounted such that it is difficult to get to it, then a slip ring would make sense.

The slip ring we use was designed for a moving conveyor belt in an assembly line.  It is a sealed unit with liquid mercury around the sliding contacts so that there is no arcing or radio frequency interference.  Also, there are very little resistance, no wear, and extremely long life.   Available installed on a new generator or as a solder-in upgrade to an existing generator.  $250  BUY NOW

KISS Spares Kit

One of the advantages to the KISS wind generator is that the spare parts are standard stuff available pretty much anywhere there is a city.  The bearings are 6203 metric, the seal is CR692683, or 17/30/7MM, the switch is 1 1/2 HP DPDT (also available at Home Depot), the rectifier is Delco #1971 987, and the collar lock is Home Depot # 436-251HC  We do have a spares kit so you you don’t have to hunt for parts when “repairing things in beautiful anchorages all over the world” (one definition of cruising).  KISS Spares Kit $80 BUY NOW

SunDanzer Solar Refrigerators and Freezers

Sundanzer DCR50 Sundanzer DCR165SunDanzer Solar Refrigerators and Freezers

SunDanzer makes energy efficient, battery powered refrigerators and freezers that are ideal for solar and wind generator systems on large boats or on land. We use one of the small freezers (5.8 cubic feet) in our home.  It’s very energy efficient.  When the grocery store has a sale on meats or poultry (or whatever), I stock up the freezer.  When our organic garden produces more than we can eat, we process the excess & freeze it for later.  If a hurricane were to knock out the power grid here, we’ve still got the SunDanzer operating on solar panels and a battery to preserve groceries and to make ice.

SunDanzer units feature 4.33″ (110 mm) of polyurethane insulation and coated steel cabinets. The brushless DC motor compressor operates on 12 or 24 VDC. A patented low-frost system reduces frost build-up for low maintenance.

SunDanzer chest-style refrigerators and freezers are easy to clean using the drain hole at the bottom of the unit. With thick insulation and a refrigeration system optimized for solar, SunDanzer refrigerators and freezers provide outstanding economical and reliable operation. SunDanzer cabinets are commercially produced by one of the world’s leading appliance manufacturers.  Each SunDanzer solar refrigerator is carefully tested before shipment, to ensure every customer will receive a great product that they can enjoy for years to come!

There are two sizes each of the refrigerator and the freezer. SunDanzer recommends that my small freezer run on 190 watts of solar power and a 370 amp hour battery bank for a 4 day power supply, but we think this recommendation allows for a lot of safety margin.  Our friends at EcoFarm in Plant City, FL, have been running their large SunDanzer refrigerator on a single 60 watt solar module!
