Michael at Bebi in Fiji writes: “Electrically, we use an integral linear current regulator to provide maximum light intensity without negatively impacting the life of the LED’s. We have had a light on ‘Shangri-La’ in continuous test for over 18 months without any sign of deterioration or discoloration in the lenses. It has been repeatedly subject to system voltages greater than 15 volts and as low as 11.5. The light has been subjected to tropical storms and the harsh radiation of the tropical sun.”

Independent testing confirms the MT45 uses 21 amp-hours per day, adjusted to 35F degrees inside, in 90F degree ambient temperature.  All Engel refrigerator/freezers use a German designed “swing compressor” that works by an electromagnet pulling a plunger/piston that compresses the refrigerant, then the plunger springs back.  The strength of the pulse of the electromagnet is determined by the heat load.  Parts are manufactured in Japan and then assembled in Indonesia.  Very popular in Australia with the guys who take their 4WD camping in the outback.

ACCESSORIES

One option is the “Slide Lock” that will hold the refrigerator to the floor of a 4WD in a roll-over (or keep it from sliding around in your boat).

Also very popular with RVers, there is a “slide tray” that allows the refrigerator freezer to slide into a compartment (like along the bottom sides of a large RV).

Most models have a lid that will open from the end, and the lid will slide off (kind of like a pintel and gudgeon arrangement).  There is an optionial lock that will prevent the lid from sliding off.  The new MR40 has a lid that opens from the side, and can be switched to open from the other side.

Most models have an optional insulated cover that would be a good idea if the refrigerator is stored where sunlight can shine directly onto it.

Global Sun Oven

Global Sun Oven

Sun Oven open for cooking

Cook On Deck, On Shore, At Home With Sun Power

Hotwire is offering the Global Sun Oven for $285.00 FOB from Tarpon Springs, Florida. That price includes a standard size oven, reflectors, stand and case, and a black enamel cooking pot with a lid.

Cooking in a Global Sun Oven (GSO) is easy, fun, natural, and nutritious, while helping the environment. GSOs are ideal for everyday use on your boat, in your back yard, at picnics, while camping, or in the event of a power failure. They can help keep your house cool in the summer by keeping the cooking heat outside.

The ovens were developed for use in less developed countries where wood fuel is expensive and disappearing rapidly. But they work wherever the sun shines. Our customers use them on their boats, or when hurricanes take out the power grid, or just for “eco/green” reasons: no electric bill increases or fuel usage!

Go Green
CNN’s video on the ecological and economic benefits of solar cooking features Sun Oven.

Even though it is called an oven, food can be baked, boiled, and steamed at cooking temperatures of 360° F to 400° F. There is no movement of air in a GSO, allowing food to stay moist and tender and flavorful. Sun-baked roasts are tastier and more succulent, and sun-baked bread has unparalleled taste and texture. The aroma of food sunning itself in a GSO is sure to please your senses.

I made a fabulous bean soup, froze the leftovers in the pot overnight, put the pot with its frozen contents into the solar oven the next morning morning and had hot soup for lunch! Our Thanksgiving turkey has been cooked in the pot with rave reviews!

Temperatures in a GSO rise slowly and evenly, allowing complex carbohydrates time to break down into simple sugars, emanating subtle natural flavors. The even temperature of the GSO prevents burning, so you do not need to stir your food while it is cooking.

There are two ways to cook in a GSO. If you refocus the oven to follow the sun every 25 to 30 minutes, cooking times and methods will be very similar to cooking with a conventional stove or oven. Or a GSO can be used for slow cooking, much like a crock-pot. You can prepare your dinner, put it in the GSO, point the oven where the sun will be approximately halfway through the time you will be gone. Leave, and come home to a tasty, slow-cooked dinner. If you run late, there is no need to worry; the GSO will keep your food warm, moist, and fresh for hours.

KISS charge controllers

The TriStar operates only in one mode at a time. Most of Hotwire’s customers will be using it with the KISS on the Diversion Control setting.

TriStar
TriStar

A small to medium solar module can also be used with the KISS since the surplus power will flow into the divert load you select for your system. For those of you using a larger solar array, we recommend a separate wiring circuit and different charge controller. Please see our info on the MPPT solar controllers, a far more efficient technology for larger solar arrays aboard.

Standard Features:

Silent, solid state microprocessor control — increases system performance and maximizes battery life.  5 year warranty.

Data Sheet

Diversion Controller Mode:

Automatically diverts excess power to a “dummy” load such as a water or space heater to regulate hydroelectric, wind generators or PV/wind “hybrid” systems. (Please see Hotwire’s Divert Load info to see the options we offer.)
Provides 3 stage control of the battery charging process. (If you want the specs on the other 2 modes, please contact Hotwire.)

KISS High Output wind generator

KISS High Ouput Wind Generator
Hotwire is now the manufacturer of the KISS High Output Wind Generator.

Three year warranty
$1,495.00 U.S. BUY NOW
Available in 12, 24 volts

The KISS was designed to supply the energy needs of the average cruising sailboat from the wind energy available in a typical Caribbean anchorage.

Additionally, it has been built to do the following:

Operate quietly
Make lots of power
Be virtually corrosion proof
Be simple to service with parts available worldwide
Be rugged enough to operate in a gale
Yet can be shut down at the flick of a switch

Electrical System
The unit has been designed to provide brute force energy. Alternating current is converted to direct current by a 50-amp automotive diode pack (commonly found worldwide) and fed directly to the ship’s electrical system. The KISS Wind Generator can be shut down in up to gale force winds by use of the on-off switch. The switch eliminates the need to approach the wind generator while it is operating.

Rotor Design
Highly cambered with twist, taper and elliptical tips for maximum torque at relatively low RPMs for minimal blade noise. Each blade is made of five layers of bi-axial glass roving pressure molded in polyester for strength with minimal flex and very light weight. All three blades are bolted to an aluminum disk which screws onto the threaded motor shaft.  Both the blade hub and shaft are tapered threads, allowing the blade assembly to be removed quickly and easiy, yet making the connection secure without lock nuts and/or set screws.

Alternator Design
A brushless alternator designed specifically to match the low speed characteristics of the rotor blades. Features such as epoxy-coated neodymium iron-boron magnets and rubber sealed #6203 metric ball bearings (commonly available worldwide) ensures that maintenance will be infrequent, simple and inexpensive.

Weight and Dimensions
The unit weighs only 17 pounds (plus 13 feet of wire at about 6 pounds). Of note is that the blades and aluminum disk weigh only four pounds, resulting in minimal precessional forces on the 3/4 inch motor shaft. The blade diameter is 60 inches. The housing is 24 inches long. The control box is 3 1/4 inches by 6 1/2 inches.

KISS Mounts

There are several ways and places to mount a wind generator aboard: attached to a stern arch, on a pole, forward of a mizzen mast, in the rigging, or even overboard and towed astern. Towing is the only option not suitable for the KISS. Here at Hotwire, we fabricate and assemble a variety of mounting brackets and hardware for your installation. Continue reading KISS Mounts

Charge Controllers

Blue Sky 2512i

Hotwire Enterprises has many charge controllers (commonly but incorrectly called “regulators”) for both solar and wind powered systems or for a hybrid system. Basically, a charge controller prevents your batteries from becoming overcharged and consequently damaged.

If you’re not sure what you need, give us a call or send us an e-mail and have the following information ready:

  • the amp hour capacity of your battery bank
  • the type of batteries you’re using (i.e., lead acid/flooded, AGM, gel)
  • how many amps you expect to get from what sources (We can help you with this one.) We’ll be glad to point you toward the best options for your needs.

The charge controllers on our list are by no means the only ones we offer. It’s just a sampling and lists the ones most popular among our customers.

Divert Loads

Divert loads are typically needed with a wind generator to reduce the possibility of voltage spikes which could damage a charge controller designed strictly for solar panels.  When the batteries become fully charged, a diversion type charge controller sends any excess energy from the wind generator to the divert load. The diversion load also maintains an electrical load on the wind generator when the batteries are fully charged. This prevents the blades from “freewheeling”, thus reducing noise and vibration as well as wear on the wind generator.

Hotwire Enterprises offers three options for divert loads: Continue reading Divert Loads
