Michael at Bebi in Fiji writes: “Electrically, we use an integral linear current regulator to provide maximum light intensity without negatively impacting the life of the LED’s. We have had a light on ‘Shangri-La’ in continuous test for over 18 months without any sign of deterioration or discoloration in the lenses. It has been repeatedly subject to system voltages greater than 15 volts and as low as 11.5. The light has been subjected to tropical storms and the harsh radiation of the tropical sun.”
SunDanzer Solar Refrigerators and Freezers
SunDanzer Solar Refrigerators and Freezers
SunDanzer makes energy efficient, battery powered refrigerators and freezers that are ideal for solar and wind generator systems on large boats or on land. We use one of the small freezers (5.8 cubic feet) in our home. It’s very energy efficient. When the grocery store has a sale on meats or poultry (or whatever), I stock up the freezer. When our organic garden produces more than we can eat, we process the excess & freeze it for later. If a hurricane were to knock out the power grid here, we’ve still got the SunDanzer operating on solar panels and a battery to preserve groceries and to make ice.
SunDanzer units feature 4.33″ (110 mm) of polyurethane insulation and coated steel cabinets. The brushless DC motor compressor operates on 12 or 24 VDC. A patented low-frost system reduces frost build-up for low maintenance.
SunDanzer chest-style refrigerators and freezers are easy to clean using the drain hole at the bottom of the unit. With thick insulation and a refrigeration system optimized for solar, SunDanzer refrigerators and freezers provide outstanding economical and reliable operation. SunDanzer cabinets are commercially produced by one of the world’s leading appliance manufacturers. Each SunDanzer solar refrigerator is carefully tested before shipment, to ensure every customer will receive a great product that they can enjoy for years to come!
There are two sizes each of the refrigerator and the freezer. SunDanzer recommends that my small freezer run on 190 watts of solar power and a 370 amp hour battery bank for a 4 day power supply, but we think this recommendation allows for a lot of safety margin. Our friends at EcoFarm in Plant City, FL, have been running their large SunDanzer refrigerator on a single 60 watt solar module!

Engel Refrigerator/Freezers
Very energy efficient, reliable and long-lived. At every boat show we do, there are people who come up to our booth and say something like, “Engel! This is the best thing we have on our boat! I love my Engel! I hereby commit my life to worshipping this product!” (OK, I never actually heard that last one, but you get the idea).

Independent testing confirms the MT45 uses 21 amp-hours per day, adjusted to 35F degrees inside, in 90F degree ambient temperature. All Engel refrigerator/freezers use a German designed “swing compressor” that works by an electromagnet pulling a plunger/piston that compresses the refrigerant, then the plunger springs back. The strength of the pulse of the electromagnet is determined by the heat load. Parts are manufactured in Japan and then assembled in Indonesia. Very popular in Australia with the guys who take their 4WD camping in the outback. One option is the “Slide Lock” that will hold the refrigerator to the floor of a 4WD in a roll-over (or keep it from sliding around in your boat).
Also very popular with RVers, there is a “slide tray” that allows the refrigerator freezer to slide into a compartment (like along the bottom sides of a large RV).
Most models have a lid that will open from the end, and the lid will slide off (kind of like a pintel and gudgeon arrangement). There is an optionial lock that will prevent the lid from sliding off. The new MR40 has a lid that opens from the side, and can be switched to open from the other side.
A digital thermometer ($10) is available to monitor the inside temperature.
Most models have an optional insulated cover that would be a good idea if the refrigerator is stored where sunlight can shine directly onto it.

Spanish for Cruisers & French for Cruisers
Spanish For Cruisers (2nd Edition – NEW!!) $31.95
French For Cruisers $29.95
by Kathy Parsons
Useful resource books for boaters in countries where Spanish or French are spoken! Each contains not only basic conversational words and phrases but also (more importantly) vocabulary specific to boat parts and jobs, including exploded diagrams of important systems along with the names of the various pieces. Handy to have even if you’re fluent!!
Guys, if you think you’re covered in this department because your wife is a native Spanish speaker from Panama or the Dominican Republic or wherever, … think again! Does she know all the technical words for the engine parts or electrical components? Do your friends’ English-speaking wives or partners know all the technical names in ENGLISH? These books will make their value OBVIOUS to you once you get to French-speaking or Spanish-speaking countries!
Global Sun Oven
Global Sun Oven
Hotwire is offering the Global Sun Oven for $285.00 FOB from Tarpon Springs, Florida. That price includes a standard size oven, reflectors, stand and case, and a black enamel cooking pot with a lid.
Cooking in a Global Sun Oven (GSO) is easy, fun, natural, and nutritious, while helping the environment. GSOs are ideal for everyday use on your boat, in your back yard, at picnics, while camping, or in the event of a power failure. They can help keep your house cool in the summer by keeping the cooking heat outside.
The ovens were developed for use in less developed countries where wood fuel is expensive and disappearing rapidly. But they work wherever the sun shines. Our customers use them on their boats, or when hurricanes take out the power grid, or just for “eco/green” reasons: no electric bill increases or fuel usage!
Go Green
CNN’s video on the ecological and economic benefits of solar cooking features Sun Oven.
Even though it is called an oven, food can be baked, boiled, and steamed at cooking temperatures of 360° F to 400° F. There is no movement of air in a GSO, allowing food to stay moist and tender and flavorful. Sun-baked roasts are tastier and more succulent, and sun-baked bread has unparalleled taste and texture. The aroma of food sunning itself in a GSO is sure to please your senses.
I made a fabulous bean soup, froze the leftovers in the pot overnight, put the pot with its frozen contents into the solar oven the next morning morning and had hot soup for lunch! Our Thanksgiving turkey has been cooked in the pot with rave reviews!
Temperatures in a GSO rise slowly and evenly,
allowing complex carbohydrates time to break down into simple sugars, emanating subtle natural flavors. The even temperature of the GSO prevents burning, so you do not need to stir your food while it is cooking.
There are two ways to cook in a GSO. If you refocus the oven to follow the sun every 25 to 30 minutes, cooking times and methods will be very similar to cooking with a conventional stove or oven. Or a GSO can be used for slow cooking, much like a crock-pot. You can prepare your dinner, put it in the GSO, point the oven where the sun will be approximately halfway through the time you will be gone. Leave, and come home to a tasty, slow-cooked dinner. If you run late, there is no need to worry; the GSO will keep your food warm, moist, and fresh for hours.

Trace C-35, C-40 or C-60 charge controllers
The C-40 (made by Xantrex) is the charge controller Hotwire recommends for use with the KISS High Output wind generator to prevent your batteries from overcharging, especially important for those of you using AGM or gel batteries. The C-series is also available in 35 amp and 60 amp capacities and can be used in one of the three following settings: Solar Charge Controller, DC Load Controller, or DC Diversion Regulator.
The C40 operates only in one mode at a time. Most of Hotwire’s customers will be using the C40 with the KISS on the Diversion Control setting. A small to medium solar module can also be used with the KISS since the surplus power will flow into the divert load you select for your system. For those of you using a larger solar array, we recommend a separate wiring circuit and different charge controller. Please see our info on the MPPT solar controllers, a far more efficient technology for larger solar arrays aboard.
Standard Features:
Silent, solid state microprocessor control — increases system performance and maximizes battery life.
Field adjustable set-points with removable knobs reduces tampering by unqualified personnel. Both calibrated scales and test-points are provided to allow precise adjustment and setting verification.
Electronically protected for short-circuit, overload, over temperature and reverse polarity conditions.
The C-40 has a “real world” rating of 40 amps @ 95degrees F / 35degrees C (comparable to a 60 amp rating of relay type controllers — 40 amp rating includes NEC required de-rating).
12V, 24V or 48VDC battery voltage — manually selected during installation (prevents problems that can be caused by automatic voltage selection systems used on other photovoltaic charge controllers).
Auto-resetting electronic over current protection — eliminates the nuisance of tripped breakers or blown fuses.
Two stage lightning and surge suppression through both active and passive protection components.
Diversion Controller Mode:
Automatically diverts excess power to a “dummy” load such as a water or space heater to regulate hydroelectric, wind generators or PV/wind “hybrid” systems. (Please see Hotwire’s Divert Load info to see the options we offer.)
Provides 3 stage control of the battery charging process. (If you want the specs on the other 2 modes, please contact Hotwire.)
Optional LCD Digital Display with back-lighting continuously displays battery voltage DC amperage, cumulative amp hours and a separately resetable “trip” amp hour measurement.
Can be mounted to the front of the C40 or located remotely using phone-type cable. Size 9″ high (28 cm), 5″ wide (127 cm), 2″ deep (51 cm), 4 lbs. (1.8 kg).
